Portsmouth Method

THE PORTSMOUTH METHOD:

The Portsmouth Method is an ongoing community revitalization project combining CrossFit, Community Partnerships, and economic development for individuals with substance use disorder.

The end state is to reverse the opioid epidemic by creating healthy, vibrant, confident, competent, and capable individuals back into society. We are turning societal liabilities into taxpaying assets.

We achieve this by getting clients healthy and sober through a unique CrossFit program , assist in their integration back into their local community, and help job placement through recovery friendly employers.

Since 2018 PSKC CrossFit has partnered with a non-profit behavioral health agency, The Counseling Center (TCC) to offer CrossFit classes to their clients. Currently PSKC CrossFit conducts 25 classes/week at two Health & Wellness Centers (HAWC) owned by TCC.

After developing relationships with clients in recovery, we became aware of their need for employment. It’s very difficult for people in treatment to find employers that will hire people with a criminal record and also be willing to work around their counseling/meetings. Based on working with clients through CrossFit, Dale (owner of PSKC) made the decision to hire as many people as possible through the gym and his two other businesses Doc Spartan and Spartan Solutions Group.

In 2018 it started with giving a person a broom and mop to clean the gym, currently we employ a total 12 people in recovery across three businesses. All of whom started as clients in the program.

To date, we have had over 22,000 (and counting) individual sessions through our classes. What started with one class a day a few times a week has grown into a program that offers a total of 5 client and staff classes at two separate facilities, a full time Health Coach, 3 former clients that have become trainers, a total of 5 people that have earned their CrossFit Level 1 trainer certificate, 3 separate entities that employ up to 12 people, annual fundraisers and community competitions, and multiple national and media articles including NBC Today Show, Boston Globe, Fox News, and New York Times.
